Why can we just buy the mangosteen fruit from an Asian grocery store?
In the USA, we have been unable to ship in the fruit whole because of laws to protect our argrcultural crops from possible bug infestations. As recent as 2007 this law was lifted so long as the fruit was “irradiated” (the process of exposing food to ionizing radiation) prior to arriving on American soil. Irradiating would kill any microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, or insects, but there are no concise independent studies on how it can effect the fruit or its nutrients. Also, you would have to eat a lot of fresh mangosteen fruit and it’s pericarp to have the equivalent of what is in our products.
