We can do that, and I would prefer it really. Trouble is, it would take 10 coal powered stations to provide the same energy as 1 nuclear one. The ‘experts’ say it’s a no brainer therefore. We are also tied up in knots over the world (G7 – I think) agreements on carbon emissions. How can we as a country lead by example if we back down on our own proposals? Also, most of Britain’s power generation companies are foreign owned and seem to be calling all the shots. It would be great if we could build coal powered stations, we now know it’s possible to build lean burning clean coal power stations, and it might force them to re open British pits and recreate hundreds of thousands of useful jobs again. It could kick start all supporting industries such as engineering and exports. But, being as we are run by idiots, it’s not going to happen. EDIT Message to others, the UK coal is not running out.
