Why cant we have more clergy?
Despite a steady increase in the number of people coming forward for ordination over the past few years, there are still not enough to replace those who have retired or left for other reasons. As a result, each diocese has been allocated a certain number of clergy per year. Although it would be possible for Portsmouth diocese to employ more than their share of priests, this would mean another diocese would go without. The diocesan synod has agreed that this would not be fair.
