Why can these areas contract for services with law enforcement agencies in adjacent jurisdictions?

• This alternative would be more costly than the current arrangement, by which jurisdictions such as Wood Village and Maywood Park contract with the Sheriff’s Office for patrol services. Furthermore, like the County, many of the law enforcement agencies in adjacent jurisdictions are undergoing budget cuts of their own and cannot handle the added burden of extending their patrol services into neighboring areas. All police officers in Multnomah County are paid a similar wage. Contracting services doesn’t save money unless you cut the number of officers on the street and that is not an acceptable optioin.
