Why can the admintool tools update NIS automatically?
The NIS protocol doesn’t support updates by programs. In SunOS 4.x the only way to update NIS was to edit the files on the NIS master then run `ypmake`. Solaris isn’t any different. In fact, Solaris doesn’t support `ypserv` at all. Customers are encouraged to migrate from NIS to NIS+. NIS+ provides much better security, better performance, and can be updated by programs. NIS+ supports a “NIS compatibility mode” to ease the transition.
