Why can seminarians choose religious studies as a major?

Seminarians are not permitted to choose religious studies as a major because of their future studies in graduate school. At Saint Mary Seminary, seminarians enter the Theologate where they focus their attention to theology and theological study. Therefore, Borromeo students are asked to choose another major in order to give them a broader academic foundation.
