The Kentucky Derby is reserved for Thoroughbred horses. Quarter horses are not weak and frail compared to Thoroughbreds, but they are bred for running a quarter of a mile. The Kentucky Derby is over one mile, and therefore not suitable for the Quarter Horse breed.
