Why can potholes be patched so the holes don recur?
During the winter months, the blacktop plants shut down their operation for making hot patch mix so they can clean and repair their machinery. During the winter months we get a cold patch mixture called HPM. This is a pliant mixture used for temporary repairs. When the water from rain or snow gets under the patch and it freezes at night, this pushes the patch up and out of the hole and with traffic it spreads all over the road. However, during these months, we do try to get out as often as needed to keep the recurring trouble areas patched. Why does it take so long for my street to get attention when it snows? When it snows or we get icy rain, the Street Department will be out as soon as it begins to get slippery. The first concern we have is to salt the main streets, hills, and around the schools. After we finish these areas, each driver then takes his salt truck to his designated section of the City and begins his route. This process takes time, and it is usually between 4 to 4 1/2 h
