Why can people quit smoking/other addictions?

Some people want to quit smoking, and can’t. Others don’t want to. Not everybody conforms to your perfect little image of everybody striving to live forever. Personally, I respect people who smoke more than I respect militant anti-smokers.

You are either really stupid or really young. You seem like a smart kid, so I’m going to go with really young. Trying to quit smoking is like trying to quit eating. Yes, it is that addictive. In fact, if I was starving, I bet I would ask for a cigarette before I asked for food. It is VERY hard to quit. Smoking does not make you a bad person. Killing people makes you a bad person. Stealing purses from little old ladies makes you a bad person. Smoking makes you stupid. Also, you have never been addicted to drugs. After I was involved in a bad car accident, I took my medication as prescribed… but became very addicted to the pain pills. It took a long time to get off them, but, with the help of my doctor, I did it. I still think about pain pills every day. I still want them, but I can resist (probably because they are not very easy to get). Still, giving up narcotics was WAY easier than trying to give up smoking. Have some compassion. Saying that smoking makes someone a bad person makes

When I was a kid I smoked. When it got expensive I quit. Nothing to it. When I was in college, I smoked 3 packs of cigarettes in 1 night to show that they weren’t really addicting. I stopped. No big deal. Little by little I bumbed my way up to a 3 pack a day habit. I kept trying to stop, because I found smoking nauseating, but I couldn’t, I was hooked. I finally stopped cold turkey. I haven’t had a drink of alcohol, a non-prescribed drug or a cigarette in 18 years. But I think about having a cigarette on a daily basis. Never say Never.
