Why can my third party software read EnviView HDF files?

Please verify that example HDF files from NCSA are indeed readable by the third party package. If only Envisat HDF data cannot be read, please send a bug report and we will investigate the problem.

This issue should only occur with EnviView 2.0 beta 1. It is characterised by an error such as this one from IDL :- % HDF_VD_GETINFO: Unsupported or unknown HDF data type (16409). EnviView 2.0 beta 1 included an optimisation on little endian platforms (Windows, linux x86, Alpha/OpenVMS) to speed up the creation of HDF files. The optimisation writes data in the platform native format, i.e. little endian. On big endian machines, such as most Unix risc machines, and Macintosh, we write using the standard HDF XDR big endian format, and this issue does not surface. Unfortunately it seems that some (not all) HDF compatible tools are refusing to read data written in little endian format in the HDF file. So, in the goal of improving our compatibility, we have disabled this optimisation in EnviView beta 1, patch 1. We may add a user preference to optionally switch it back on in the future, if there is an interest. The patch is supplied on the EOQ Envisat Sampler.
