Go to any place in India you will get some fruit or the other which may be local to the place or a particular season. No wonder India contributes 10 percent of world fruit production but manages to export only one percent of the produce. Much of our fruits are consumed raw or goes into juice but much of it would be wasted because of lack of cold storage facilities. Surprisingly, in the land filled with fruits branded carbonated beverages sell more rather than fresh concentrated juice especially in urban areas and metros. As the weather hots up people queue up for bottled soda even as water melons, sugar cane juices, tender coconut water, and our humble nimbu pani (lemon juice) vie for the consumer’s pie.
