Why Can I Use Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) Batteries with the Handy Board?

0

The Handy Board’s battery charging method is a simple trickle-charge circuit that never turns itself off ( normal charge ). This is fine for nicads; trickle-charging them indefinitely does them no harm. NiMH cells, however, require that the charge current cease when the cells are fully charged. If the HB’s nicads are replaced with NiMHs, the circuit will permanently damage the NiMH cells. (See http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/battery/oem/images/pdf/Panasonic_NIMH_Precautions.pdf and http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/battery/oem/images/pdf/Panasonic_NiMH_ChargeMethods.pdf for discussions of proper NiMH charge methods.
