Why can I throw light bulbs or window glass in with the clear or colored glass containers?
Glass is much like plastic. While most glass looks very similar, the recopies used to produce glass for different applications vary widely and they do not tolerate contaminants. For example, window glass melts at different temperatures than container glass. Automobile glass often has a layer of resin sandwiched between two layers of glass. Mirrors and fluorescent tubes contain other chemical contaminants that make them difficult to recycle. Therefore, if various glass types are mixed together, they will not be marketable and thus not be recyclable.
