It would have been very hard to win over a married woman for an affair, since she’d face death at the hands of her husband if she got caught. And since there was almost no privacy, getting caught was almost certain. And it was a similar situation with unmarried girls: Their having pre-marital sex would have made it impossible to find a husband for them if people found out. In this case, a girl’s parents would be stuck with her for the rest of her life – and that’s a heavy burden in a place where food is scarce and families regularly face hunger.
