Why can I connect to the Exchange Server via MAPI if I have Outlook 2003 or Outllook 2007?

A. MAPI is a messaging architecture used by Outlook to natively connect to an Exchange server. However, older implementations of MAPI included in various Outlook editions can leave Cal Poly Pomona’s Exchange servers susceptible to vulnerabilities. Consequently, we will be blocking older “versions” of Outlook’s implementation of MAPI to protect the campus email services. We are NOT blocking the Outlook client itself, only its implementation of MAPI. Other messaging protocols including POP and IMAP will be unaffected by this restriction. This restriction ONLY pertains to MAPI.
