Why can I click on the red exclamation point in the ArcMap TOC to set the data source for a raster?

This action is not supported at 8.0.2. Instead, right click on the layer name in the TOC and choose Set Data Source, or use the Set Data Source button on the Source tab of the raster Layer Properties page. When I look in ArcCatalog’s General tab on the Data Set Properties page, I see that my BIL rasters have a format name of ESRI BIL. However, in the ArcCatalog Metadata tab they are named ArcInfo and Space Imaging BIL Image. BIP and BSQ have the same difference. Why? The Metadata tab does not show the proper names for these formats at version 8.0.2.
