Why can cats be trained for bomb sniffing/rescue like dogs can?”
Dogs have great smelling qualities that many animals do not. I read an example of how a dog smells. When you are in a large office with cubicles and such and in the break room someone pops popcorn it quickly begins to travel throughout. You smell that for sure. Depending on the breed some can REALLY sniff out because they were bread to do so. Hounds and so on. However, a German Shepherd does just fine. Do to its police use over decades security usually like to use them because they do have good sniff qualities and seem a little more manly and “threatening” although they are quite nice. Labs and such are used in rescues because they have the friendly qualities that those rescued appreciate. Most people don’t mind a lab where some are a bit afraid of the German Shepherds and you don’t want to jolt a person anymore when they are being rescued. Now, for the physiology of their sniffers I don’t know why dogs are better. Hopefully someone else can come along with that information.
cat’s sense of smell is only 14 times better than humans. Dogs on the other hand, have superior ‘sniffer’ capabilities with a nose that smells 25 times better than a human’s. also, i can’t imagine a cat crawling around in the rubble of a demolished building or collapsed mine shaft. they are just not built physically for hard work. More likely, they are better trained to train their people to do their work for them!!!! {big staring eyes–open that cat food can!}} Dogs experience the world nose-first © Deb Smith How does a dog get the neighborhood news? Through its nose! Of all a dog’s senses, its sense of smell is the most highly developed. Dogs have about 25 times more olfactory (smell) receptors than humans do. These receptors occur in special sniffing cells deep in a dog’s snout and are what allow a dog to “out-smell” humans. © RONCO/Washington Dogs can sense odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can.
