Why can Catholic priests get married?good idea?
1 Cor 7 states that priests will be unable to completely devote themselves to God’s work if they also have a wife. I kind of like having celibate priests in that it allows them to devote themselves to their ministry. The apostles may have been married, but they probably weren’t able to be very good husbands due to their travels and their ministry. Also, no one is forbidden from marriage. Priests, monks, and nuns each go into their vocation choosing a life celibacy. That’s their decision. I don’t think it makes any of them outsiders; most of them are actively involved in community life. Also, remember that any unmarried Catholic is supposed to practice celibacy. Does this make them unable to understand “regular people?” A celibate priest can council a married couple in the same way that a psychologist can council someone who’s attempted suicide – through training.
