Why can anything travel faster than the speed of light?
The equations of electromagnetism (known as Maxwells equations) show that the velocity of light is always 299,792,458meters per second. The equations make no mention of frame of reference. It follows that any two observers who measure the speed of a single beam of light must obtain the same value irrespective of their relative states of motion. From this you can deduce (special relativity) that the speed of an object in an inertial frame that is not your inertial frame is always less, than the speed of light.Even using two object that I measure to be travelling away from each other at 75 % of the speed of light would measure each others speed as less than 150% light speed indeed as less than light speed. This is non intuitive because our intuition is gained from every day observances but we are not used to dealing with speeds aproaching the speed of light in our every day lives.
