Why can all routes be gritted on a more regular basis?
It can take our gritters up to four hours to salt one route and even longer in severe weather conditions. Lancashire County Council is responsible for over 4,000 miles of roads of which approximately 1,500 miles are part of the County Council’s Priority Road Network for salting and snow clearing. In an ideal world, we would aim to salt every road in Lancashire but in reality, this is not possible due to cost and resources. Instead, we have identified 49 priority routes which together with those national routes that the Highways Agency is responsible for treating, help to keep Lancashire moving. We will only treat the Secondary Road Network when persistent ice and/or snow are present and once the Priority Road Network is maintained clear.
