Macintosh(tm) files consist of two parts: a resource fork and a data fork. If a Mac file is transmitted across the Internet without being encoded, one of the parts is lost – the resource fork. Encoding a Mac file combines the two parts in such a way as to keep them together when being transmitted across the Internet.
