Why cant a basenji dog bark?
If you think of where a basenji comes from and what else is in the jungle with them in Africa – the noisy ones likely were lunch. The silent ones escape detection from things like Lions, tigers etc. They do not need to bark to do their function (drive prey into pits or nets that the natives have prepared) or to keep the vermin down in the village. Man actually taught dog to bark. If you think of Wolf, Coyote, Fox, Dingo they are vocal but don’t typically string a lot of barks together. Some basenjis to bark once – and I guarantee you that they are excellent watch dogs and you will know by their behavior if someone is coming.
