Why can WSB-AM easily heard far away at night?
WSB-AM is among the first 50 radio stations licensed by the government to broadcast at “full-power” 24/7. That means other radio stations at 750 on the dial must power down at night. When radio stations were first licensed, the signal had to be powerful enough to reach communities not served by a local radio station. This is also key in times of emergency. When Hurricane Hugo devastated the Carolinas in 1989, taking down radio station towers, WSB-AM could be heard in the community. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, WSB-AM was one of the few stations that could be heard in the area.
