Why can animals swim in such cold water?
Well, different types of animals have different strategies for living in very cold water. Whales, seals and penguins have blubber, a kind of fat, under their skin to keep them warm by insulating them from the cold water. Some fish, in particular one called the Antarctic icefish, have special chemicals in their blood to keep it from freezing—just like some people put antifreeze chemicals in their car in the winter.
