Thus, the tie hangs down and flaps in the breeze, interfering with everyday tasks. The bow tie, on the other hand, stays nice and neat on your neck. It only comes down to about midway between your collar button and your second button. That’s why the bow tie is the tie of choice for the mad scientist who works in the lab and doesn’t want to worry about setting his (or her, I guess) tie on fire when it hangs by the Bunsen burner. Second is the more aesthetic reason. Bow ties have always been considered as strange or quirky, and that appeals to me.
