Why bother with Ubuntu Linux ?
Oh don’t become celibate again. OTOH digging out your 18 year old Amiga 500 doesn’t sound so bad — any way to compromise? Debian and its derivatives are USUALLY great. They install straightforwardly have good hardware recognition (USUALLY) and provide a stable environment. Ubuntu is not the most powerful version but it is usually the most stable and I know that is just not your experience. I have found that ONCE IN A WHILE what appears to be a perfectly good install disk which passes all the md5sum and sha1sum tests will fail to detect my video card or mouse driver. This has happened on Debian itself, Ubuntu, MEPIS and almost every Debian derivative except Knoppix. It has NEVER happened to me on Knoppix. Generally my solution is just to open it up and type “sudo dpkg-reconfigure” and the program — xserver-xorg or whatever. Hald.
