Why Become a Horse Farm of Environmental Distinction?

It’s a matter of pride. The Connecticut Horse Environmental Awareness Program (HEAP) honors horse owners who are especially effective at protecting soil and water resources while keeping horses. The award recognizes those owners who take pride in being good stewards of the land and good neighbors to those who share our common water resources. Those farmers who apply will compete for a colorful, aluminum 18″ x 24″ Horse Farm of Environmental Distinction sign. Judges will visit each farm to review management practices for environmental protection. An example score card of possible best management practices follows. HEAP is a coalition of federal, state, and local agencies and groups of individuals concerned with creating environmental awareness within the equine community.
