Why asian elephant endangered?

I have a couple of reasons for the dwindling numbers of Asian elephants: 1. NO POLITICAL WILL. (Elephants anyway do not vote :-)) 2. There is very little habitat left for them to forage (rem that they are a range animal and need lot of space). On myopic looks it seems to be the communities residing in the fringes of these forests who ‘destroy’ these habitats and linking corridors. This could again be related to the socio-political scenario of the state and the opportunity it offers to its people as livelihood options. But if we are to delve deeper and look for reasons for loss of habitat, it is also the market demand for timber and other forest resources (both legal and illegal) from far off towns and cities.
