Why arthroscopic surgery?
General Arthroscopic surgery of the knee is the commonest operation performed by orthopaedic surgeons. It is so common that it is highly likely that you, the patient, know several people who have undergone this type of surgery. It is very tempting to compare the outcome of your operation with those of people you know. However, this will lead to confusion because arthroscopic surgery is a technique used to accomplish a wide variety of surgical goals for a wide variety of diagnoses and a wide spectrum of severity. If you think that all arthroscopic surgery is the same you may be in danger of owersimplifying the situation and comparing apples to oranges. Another thing to remember is that arthroscopic surgery is surgery, often requiring many of the things associated with surgery – anaesthetics, cutting of tissue inside your knee, bleeding, a healing period and a need to rehabilitate.
