I can think of a couple of reasons not to use bricks in the Northwest part of the US. First of all, that entire part of the country is subject to earthquakes. Masonry is the worst thing from which to build a structure if you want it to survive an earthquake. The second reason for not using brick is because it does not provide much insulation. The Northwest is subject to pretty cold winters.
