Why aren there any author packages based on the ordinary LaTeX document classes (article et al.) as opposed to AMS-LaTeX?
• The AMS document classes are designed to match the specifications for AMS publications, and should always be used if you are preparing a manuscript for publication by the AMS. (If you are using an AMS document class, you are using AMS-LaTeX by default.) Some AMS book series have distinctive styles that cannot be matched without considerable effort, and it is not practical to try to match these styles based on the ordinary LaTeX document classes. • AMS-LaTeX has more comprehensive features designed specifically for typesetting mathematical content. The apparent simplicity of sticking with “plain” LaTeX document classes turns out to be a booby-trap in the longer run when authors encounter problems. • If you are preparing a manuscript for some publisher other than the AMS, you can use the amsmath and amsthm packages separately; these packages are built into the AMS document styles.
