Why aren’t the lines wider—wouldn’t they be easier to see?

All are 100mm wide except for lines on freeways near ‘critical” areas (such as exit ramps) which are 200mm wide. These dimensions are consistent with national standards. The Ministry may approve wider edge lines (150mm) at locations where they are considered justified from a safety perspective. A network-wide use of wider lines would add significant cost to the Ministry’s pavement marking costs.
