Why aren the latex mattresses thicker like others the marketplace?
A 5 1/2″ latex mattress is more mattress than anyone needs for support. The only reason for adding additional layers is to combine a firm latex mattress core (5 1/2″) with a softer comfort layer to accomodate heavier body weights, or comfort preferences. The primary reason bedding manufacturers are making higher profile latex mattress is because latex mattresses have to compete on the showroom floor with thicker innerspring mattresses. In the majority of cases any latex mattress over 8.5″ will contain a non-latex component as the base layer.
