Why aren the best classical composers today writing musicals like Leonard Bernsteins “West Side Story”?
In my opinion: Composers today are more focused on experimentation in their compositional styles. These experiments often lead away from tonality. Bernstein composed with much tonality, so maybe that’s the reason why composers today aren’t writing like Bernstein did. Of course, there are many exceptions to this rule.
