Why aren stoves manufactured in Kenya?
As you can imagine, Africa is not yet a highly industrialized continent. Although Kenya is one of the more advanced nations in East Africa, it lacks an industrial base that can deliver quality products at low prices. As is the case here in the states, quality durable goods can often be manufactured and imported from China at a lower cost than can be achieved manufacturing locally. Because we seek to build our projects in service of the poorest of the poor, low cost is a primary driver in how we select stoves in conjunction with the communities. Right now, those stoves generally come from China. It is our long term goal to have stoves of the right design and quality manufactured in Kenya using local people and providing jobs. We’re working on it.
