Why aren phloem vessels dead like xylem?
Phloem vessels have to actively transport materials such as sugars and nutrients and therefore have to have an energy producing organelles to be able to do this. Xylem are just capillary tubes, which transport water by a mixture of the pull of surface tension and transpiration in the water column and capillary action to allow water to move up the plant.
