Why aren’t non-designated roads posted?

0

In the mid-1980’s, the Federal government required all states to designate highways up to 80,000 lbs. gross weight. Until that time, all roads in Illinois had a maximum gross weight of 73,280 lbs. While most designated highways are State highways, local municipalities and counties can designate certain roads as 80,000 lbs. Designated highways are by far still the exception. A rule to remember is this: All roads are non-designated, unless they’re not. If you are not sure, call ahead to the local police department and ask them. It would be an incredibly burdensome and expensive job to post every non-designated road with a sign. That is why designated roads are posted as Class I, II, or III.
