Why aren Hispanics/Latinos classified as a racial group in the US Census?

From reading the comment threads here I understand what AWC is asking. He is asking why Hispanic/Latinos are not considered “racial groups” rather than “ethnic groups.” I just commented and shall copy and paste that comment as my answer: A lot of us are considered ethnic groups despite meeting the full criteria for race. My people, for example, have a distinct and unique Y chromosome only found in us and we are on the way to isolating our mitochondrial DNA. That was as of about a year ago: the marker on our mitochondrial DNA might have been found by now. . We meet every criteria for “race.” But, due to narrow classifications, we are stuck under “ethnic group.” . Same for Latinos and many others.
