Why are windmills important in Holland?
The Netherlands is famous for its windmills (windpumps) which are used to pump water out of the polders where people live. Much of the country is below sea level. The Dutch have always had to manage water levels in their country just to keep their feet dry. In fact, the newest province, Flevoland, has been created by pumping water out, turning water into land. Many other types of windmills exist. Some are for processing grain and stuff. Also, modern windmills are used to generate electricity (wind turbines).
