Why are white people so obsessed about getting a tanned skin?
Well, skin complexion used to go along with status. Back in the old English days, people preferred being pale because it was a sign of high status. Only laborers and poor people were outside enough to get tanned skin. So a tan meant that you were poor. But in America, it reversed when industrialization started. Poor people worked indoors and their skin became more pale. If you had a tan, it meant that you could afford to travel and spend leisure time on the beach instead of working from pay-check to pay-check. I learned that from my anthropologist professor. I guess the trend caught on and people decades later just don’t really think about where it comes from anymore.
