Why are voters being asked to raise property taxes for Luther Burbank Park?
For years Mercer Islanders have enjoyed Luther Burbank Park, a large property of 77 acres with three-quarters of a mile of Lake Washington waterfront and various recreational areas and amenities. In late 2001 King County notified the City of Mercer Island that it intended to close Luther Burbank Park because it could no longer afford to operate and maintain it. After carefully evaluating the condition of the park, the City Council agreed to accept transfer of Luther Burbank from King County effective January 1, 2003. Luther Burbank represents a permanent obligation and expense. The levy would pay for maintenance and operation of Luther Burbank for six years.
