Why are US Supreme Court decisions important?
US Supreme Court decisions are binding on all courts in the United States. They also affect how laws will be applied. One important Supreme Court decision was the Gideon Decision. It was based on a statement in the constitution that a person going to jail has the right to a lawyer. The United States Supreme Court ruled that if any court was going to send anyone to jail, it had to provide that person with a lawyer first. If a court can not provide a person with a lawyer, that person does not have to go to jail. All other courts in the land have to abide by that decision.
