The following quote sums up the reason from ADAC 3/2000 (The German equivalent of the AA): “The price spans listed in the table (without balancing and fitting costs) are based on a nationwide dealer survey carried out in December 1999. Prices listed serve only as an approximate benchmark and may vary greatly from dealer to dealer. The reason: tyre manufacturers sell their products at very different prices. Criteria such as quantity or time of order have a direct influence on the dealer’s purchase price. The dealer is forced to recalculate prices to adapt to market forces.
