Why are transgender women the ideal hosts for a makeover show?
Transgender people represent the ultimate makeover. You change the outside a little and you feel so different on the inside. It’s a constant dialectic. And we’ve done it ourselves. We’ve learned to live our truth. In the first episode you guys go out to Mobile, Alabama. Wasn’t that scary!?! That’s where I’m from—I grew up in Mobile! But it is always wild to go back there. I felt so disconnected when I was a kid. In my mind I wasn’t really there. I was already gone. The women you work with on the show didn’t realize they’re going to be made over by transwomen. How do they react? Everyone’s reaction was different. You really have to tune in to see. Why not have them know ahead of time? Because as much as the show is about clothes and make-up and looking fabulous, it’s also about honesty. How they feel about how they look, how they feel about us. I’m not about self-censoring, I’m into the truth of how people feel. And if we do it that way, maybe we can help humanize transgender people in
