Why are they selling the Communicator separately?
(Last updated: 05/08/2003) Back to top So that people can get into Xbox Live without necessarily having to buy a Starter Kit. Here’s the scenario Microsoft hopes will pay off in new XBL subscriptions: • You purchase an XBL-enabled title • You decide you want to try it online • You purchase a Communicator and take advantage of the two-month free trial (included with the game) • After two months, you’re completely hooked and buy a one-year subscription for $49.99 (the renewal rate). Of course, it would be cheaper to buy a Starter Kit – especially considering the included pack-in games – but $69.99 might be more than people want to fork over at the start. NOTE: Guests still CANNOT use the Communicator (at least not in the usual way – see the See Also links below). You will need a valid Gamertag to use a Communicator.
