Why are there two different versions of Coeus at SUNY?
When SUNY launched Coeus 3.8 in 2001, it was after making significant customizations to the source code. Because MIT released the first IRB module with version 4.0 in 2004, then for SUNY to implement this module would have meant either… • Re-doing all the customizations so that version 4.0 would include those changes. • Losing all the customizations to implement 4.0 just as MIT released it, or “plain vanilla.” • Implementing version 4.0 on top of 3.8 and running both versions independently. SUNY chose the third option to avoid interfering with existing business that relied on Coeus. As of July 5, 2006 Coeus 4.1.1 has been implemented campus-wide. SUNY chose option 2 from above and implemented “plain vanilla.” Therefore, many customizations form Coeus 3.8 are not in version 4.1.1. With that said, the new version has added many great features and provides greater flexibility.
