Why are there trees in nursery pots sitting in the common area between Landsdowne and Island Creek Elementary?
Many of you may have noticed the tree nursery stock sitting between our community and Island Creek Elementary School on our side of Morning View Lane. You may have also seen traps associated with the trees. Sadly, many of the trees are dying. They are ash trees and are part of a joint Fairfax County/University of Maryland study to determine the prevalence of the emerald ash borer in Fairfax County. The emerald ash borer is a beetle native to Asia. The borer first appeared in Michigan in 2002 and appeared in Fairfax County in 2003. These beetles are extremely invasive, attacking ash tree bark – eventually killing the tree by robbing it of nutrients. This study is tasked with determining prevalence of the insects in our area and ultimately working toward a solution to the problem. Fortunately, there are presently very few native ash trees in Landsdowne. For additional information on the emerald ash beetle, please visit (www.emeraldashborer.
