Why are there strange boxes appearing on the screen instead of quotation marks?
Computers in different parts of the world display different character sets based on the regional needs, and, unfortunately, not every character mapped in one country corresponds directly with a similar character in another country. The most common culprit of missing characters are smart quotes. Smart quotes are quotation marks which have unique opening and closing marks. Usually, this means a single or double quote in which the “tail” of the mark curves toward the enclosed text, and another matching mark on the opposite side of the enclosed text, but for which the “tail” ALSO curves toward the text. For proper compatibility, please disable “smart quotes” in your text editor/word processing program. Alternatively, before posting to the archive, you can perform a Search/Replace to find all smart quotes (opening and closing, single and double) and replace them with their boring, straight counterparts.
