Why are there so many types of cancer all of a sudden?
Do you actually have evidence that cancer was rare decades ago? In fact cancer rates have not risen significantly in the last several decades, and there are not new types of cancer emerging either. Cancer is an ancient disease that has been around as long as humankind and longer. It appears more prevalent these days for a few reasons: Better health care means more people are surviving into old age. Cancer is largely a disease of ageing – the vast majority of people diagnosed with cancer are over 60. Better and more efficient screening. More publicity; with today’s media – internet, hundreds of radio and TV channels etc – much more is heard about cancer. Especially as people are more willing and even eager to talk about it. When my dad had cancer in the 50s (almost 6 decades ago) his mother was mortified because she associated cancer with dirt; a woman in her position today would probably discuss her son’s condition with her friends.
