Why are there so few successful racially diverse (African-American, hispanic, etc.) design firms or agencies nationally?
This was selected as Best Answer Unfortunately the cause is probably not racism. It is something worse. Long term experience doing design firm selling in anglo cultures tends to reveal certain patterns, rather deep and abstract and long term ones. Among the strongest of them is clients who fear, dislike, or actually bother to reject design teams assigned to their accounts who are not populated by people “exactly like themselves”. I saw this going on for years and did not think much of it, one way or the other, and only gradually realized that wanting great ideas and designs from people socio-economically and culturally like oneself was unnecessary, counter-productive, and assinine. Yet there the evidence was–time and time again, clients suggested or enforced changes on design teams that edited OUT those of different X, where X was anything at all different from the client’s image of him\herself.
